My family is scattered around the globe - literally - and my senior citizen parents in rural upstate New York are so tech-resistant that they refused to have an answering machine until 2006. They won't use a phone to call abroad - period.  (Safe to say that after no calls for 16 years?)  But the computer installed a few years before?  Can't live without it and we exchange e-mail daily. My mother has even researched the family genealogy and has written a book on her computer, since then. And (like the previous comment-poster's mother) if the computer breaks, it gets replaced within a day! She later confided that she couldn't sleep that night--she was so anxious about having received "such an expensive gift" that she "would never use."  Today, she is a month away from her 86th birthday.  She read the Times on line every day, goes to various other sites and regularly exchanges email with friends, children and grandchildren.
